International Baccalaureate (IB)

Founded in 1968, The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a non-profit organisation with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Formerly known as the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), IB offers four educational programmes, amongst which is the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP).

IBDP is a two-year educational programme providing an internationally accepted qualification for entry into higher education to students aged 16-19.

Recognised by many universities worldwide, the programme was developed by a group of international educators and is currently being taught in over 140 countries.

Characterised as ‘more academically challenging and broader than three or four A-levels’ by The Guardian, the diploma is awarded following assessments in six subject areas:

  • Native language and literature (including over 80 languages)
  • Additional language (including Latin or Classical Greek)
  • Humanities (including Economics, Geography, History, ITGS or Philosophy)
  • Experimental Sciences (including Chemistry, Biology, Physics, DT or Computer Science)
  • Mathematics (including Financial Mathematics)
  • Arts (including Dance, Music, Theatre, Visual Arts or Film)

Almost all subjects are evaluated using both internal and external assessors, with points being awarded from 1 to 7 (7 is equal to A*, 6 is equal to A, etc). Globally, the pass rate for IB Diploma is approximately 80%.

IBDP is accepted at over 2000 universities, and many of them, including 58 colleges and universities in the US, offer scholarships to IBDP graduates under conditions specified by each institution.
